Brief: Using the Community Health Worker Model to Promote Breastfeeding
The health and economic benefits of breastfeeding for maternal and infant health are well documented. Despite breastfeeding’s distinction as an important public health issue, breastfeeding rates among the U.S. Hispanic population fall below Healthy People 2020 targets. There is an urgency to identify strategies that can increase exclusive breastfeeding rates to 6 months among the U.S. Hispanic population. The Community Health Worker (CHW) model is one of these promising strategies.
This brief report, created for organizations that aim to implement breastfeeding programs using the CHW model, is available for free to our resource portfolio members. It includes information from two successful CHW-led breastfeeding programs implemented by MHP Salud.
MHP Salud has over 35 years of experience implementing CHW programs and training organizations looking to start and/or strengthen their own CHW programs. Visit our CHW Training & Consulting Services page to learn more about how we can help.
