Financial Literacy Workshop

Financial hardship is a prominent and complex barrier to health for many individuals. When families are in tough financial situations, the cost of health care, prescription drugs, the ability to maintain reliable transportation, and access to fresh and nutritious foods are compromised. Community Health Workers (CHWs) are well-situated to address the complex issues that can lead a family into financial strain because of their ability to build strong relationships with community members and their knowledge of available resources. These attributes allow them to provide information and education to help increase knowledge around general financial systems and practices. This Financial Literacy Workshop will provide team members practical tips, information, and resources to impliment a financial literacy program led by CHWs.

Overview

The 4-hour Financial Literacy Workshop will cover a variety of personal finance topics that can impact the status of an individuals health such as, maintaining a checking and savings account, building and repairing credit, and avoiding debt. The workshop will be led by an expert MHP Salud staff who will provide information and recommendations based on over 35 years of observations and outcomes from our own CHW-led programs.  The workshop can be offered online or in-person at a site of your choosing.

It is recommended that a variety of staff participate, including Community Health Workers, supervisors, and even C-suite professionals. This approach allows participants to hear and incorporate multiple perspectives into their program plan and gain a better understanding of how every piece of their organization will be involved in their Community Health Worker program.

During the workshop, we will guide you through a series of team-based exercises, including brainstorming, organizational assessments, and other collaborative activities. By the end of the session, you will have the tools that your organization needs to design and implement a successful CHW-led financial literacy program in your community.
