announcing our new community health worker training workshops

Workshops for Community Health Workers and Their Organizations

A New Way to Enable Your Entire Team

We are excited to announce the launch of our new training workshops. These 4-hour training sessions function similar to electives within our L.E.A.D. curriculum, which provides comprehensive training for Community Health Workers and individuals across the organizations they serve. Unlike the central curriculum, which seeks to educate and empower participants according to their role, workshops instead aim to enable an entire team within an organization to design and implement their own Community Health Worker program that addresses a specific issue within their community. This year, we will be launching workshops on the following topics with the hope of launching more soon:

  • Diabetes
  • Financial Literacy
  • Healthy Living

We have selected these as our first workshop topics due to our breadth of experience and knowledge in these particular areas. Workshop attendees can expect to leave these half-day sessions with greater knowledge of how to design and implement Community Health Worker programs at their organization that will address the selected issue.

In keeping with our mission and philosophy, our workshop sessions emphasize collaboration, group discussions, and team work to generate program goals, objectives, and priorities. For example, we begin our workshops with brainstorming activities in order to determine the unique qualities and needs of a community and isolate the “who,” “what,” and “how” of their future Community Health Worker-led program. As groups progress through the workshop, our trainers then facilitate team-based program design activities, working to simultaneously provide help and guidance while enabling participants to utilize their own knowledge and experiences to craft successful programs.

Our organization specializes in training others organizatrions to utilize Community Health Workers and implement CHW programs.

We have over twenty years of experience training others on how to implement CHW programs.

For example, during our discussion of external factors that may impact program success, we not only provide guidance and instruction on gauging community interest and need prior to the launch of a program, but also encourage participants to identify possible collaboration opportunities with other organizations and agencies in their area. We know from experience that the success of a Community Health Worker program hinges on community involvement and support, so we make a point to encourage participants to utilize their own knowledge of and connections to the community they serve in order to create strong, well-supported programs.

We also walk through some common challenges encountered in new Community Health Worker-led programs and encourage participants to work as a team to come up with solutions both during and after the workshop. For instance, during the workshops, we ask participants to consider whether they will require full or part-time Community Health Workers to meet their program goals without exceeding their budget, and also encourage them to have continuing discussions around this subject as the program evolves. We also provide recommendations for recruiting Community Health Workers and outreach strategies to ensure the organization reaches participants who would benefit from the program.

While the topics may vary, the goal of every workshop session is to enable an organization to develop an effective Community Health Worker program. We believe that our combination of group collaboration paired with the guidance of MHP Salud experts yields unique programs that are perfectly tailored to suit a community’s needs.
