After the Diagnosis … Navigating Nutrition and Cancer
A cancer diagnosis brings more questions than answers. And often, one of the first questions patients and families ask is: “What should I eat?”
Nutrition plays a role not only in physical healing but also in emotional and social well-being. Yet many oncologists receive little formal training in nutrition, leaving patients to sort through overwhelming and sometimes conflicting advice.
To help, MHP Salud has partnered with Healing Works Foundation to make trusted resources available in Spanish. Following the pocket guide on patient advocacy, we’re proud to share La Guía de Bolsillo sobre la Nutrición y el Cáncer — a companion guide that addresses the complex relationship between cancer and what we eat.
This practical, compassionate guide explores:
- The body’s response to food during treatment. Changes in taste and appetite are common, and the guide offers strategies to adapt.
- Cancer-fighting foods. From broccoli and leafy greens to whole grains and berries, everyday foods can provide powerful support.
- Food safety. With weakened immune systems, patients need clear steps to prevent infection.
- Balanced approaches. Instead of restrictive “cancer diets,” the guide emphasizes flexibility, common sense, and cultural connection.
- Emotional care. Food is also comfort, joy, and an expression of care — all essential parts of healing.
With this resource, patients and caregivers have practical tools to make informed choices about nutrition, without fear or guilt. It’s another way MHP Salud affirms our commitment to person-centered care, ensuring everyone has access to resources that support healing of body, mind, and spirit.
