Community Health Workers in Michigan, A Historic Look at the Rise of the Profession
The first Community Health Workers in Michigan were trained in the 1960s to provide services to their communities. Around this time, the federal government began providing funding for community-based programs that used CHWs to reach underserved communities. Community Health Workers in Michigan and across the country began having an impact on the national level when in 1978, CHWs formed the New Professionals Special Primary Interest Group in the American Public Health Association (APHA).

CMS Announces 2014 Navigator Grantees… Including MHP Salud!
This week MHP Salud received notification of refunding for the Navigator program for a second year from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services. The program employs Community Health Workers (CHWs) as bilingual educators and assistants for Latinos seeking health insurance through the new Marketplace in south Texas.
MHP Salud Announces Partnership to Expand Chronic Care Management in South Texas with CHWs
MHP Salud is participating in a project to expand proactive, chronic care management to residents of Texas’ Rio Grande Valley who are either uninsured or covered by Medicaid. The project involves close collaboration among a team of community partners representing the clinical, academic, and nonprofit sectors. MHP’s role is to hire and manage Promotores(as) to provide participants with health education, navigation, and other related services.
