Brief: Using Community Health Worker Programs to Promote Breastfeeding
The health and economic benefits of breastfeeding for maternal and infant health are well documented. Despite breastfeeding’s distinction as an important public health issue, breastfeeding rates among the U.S. Hispanic population fall below Healthy People 2020 targets. There is an urgency to identify strategies that can increase exclusive breastfeeding rates to 6 months among the U.S. Hispanic population. Community Health Worker (CHW) programs are one of these promising strategies.
This brief report, created for organizations that aim to implement breastfeeding programs with CHWs, is available for free to our resource portfolio members. It includes information from two successful CHW-led breastfeeding programs implemented by MHP Salud.
