MHP Salud Resource Portfolio:
CHW Return on Investment
CHW Return on Investment
For over 35 years, MHP Salud has demonstrated the positive impacts of Community Health Worker programs all over the country. One area of focus has been the economic benefits of CHW programs measured through a return on investment (ROI) analysis. Measuring ROI of CHW-led programs, and sharing the results, contributes to a growing body of evidence that investments in these programs are both impactful and financially sustainable. ROI results additionally provide a great “snapshot” of information to share with both stakeholders and the community, to demonstrate both social and fiscal responsibility.
CHWs may encompass a wide variety of roles and be referred to by a number of titles but generally, their primary role is linking vulnerable populations to health care or social systems. CHWs are effective because they use pre-existing networks and culturally appropriate messages to access populations that have traditionally had poor access to health care systems. This short brief report reviews the concept of CHWs and offers information about the efficacy of CHW programs.
Despite mounting evidence of the positive impacts CHW programs can have, there is currently a lack of data relating these services to financial outcomes. This report offers an overview of the studies conducted on determining the ROI of CHW interventions across the U.S., and also offers suggestions on how to conduct an ROI analysis on your program.

Growing evidence suggests that Promotora programs lead to improved health outcomes and are a cost-effective alternative to other preventative outreach programs. One possible method to further evaluate and understand CHW programs’ economic impact is a “Return On Investment” (ROI) analysis, which calculates the total benefit derived from each dollar invested in a program. Learn more about the return on investment from CHW programs with this report that reviews the results of MHP Salud’s ROI analysis conducted with four Federally-Qualified Health Centers.

This is a toolkit to figure out the ROI of a Community Health Worker (CHW) program unique to your organization.
