CHW Professional Development: A Journey from CHW to Eligibility Specialist

Each month, we will highlight the journey of individuals' professional development into roles within and outside of the CHW profession. The first story is about Marco's journey from CHW to Eligibility Specialist. The second features Ricardo, who also became an Eligibility Specialist, but unlike Marco, he did not start out as a CHW. This story is included to illustrate how the CHW profession builds skillsets that are desirable across industries. It is also included to illustrate the key differences between the CHW profession and other careers in related fields.

Collect meaningful information about your Health Center’s Community Health Worker Program with our new Feedback Form

Program evaluation is an essential component of any successful Community Health Worker program. Obtaining regular feedback from community members of the target population adds an important dimension to this evaluation. Determining whether the program meets the needs of the people it aims to serve can assist Health Centers in modifying or reinforcing its program activities to best address the needs and interests of the community. Ideally, this feedback is collected at least once a year, usually at the middle or end of a program year.

MHP Salud's new Program Coordinator, Patria Alguila's career path has followed a similar growth trajectory. She has risen through the ranks as a volunteer health counselor, a CHW, a CHW supervisor, a trainer of CHWs and their supervisors, and now she serves as Co-Chair of the Florida CHW Coalition where she's advocating for CHWs at the state level.

Crafting the business case for community care

Over his two years in Zambia, Brad ran health education programs about HIV and malaria prevention and family planning services. In his free time, he coached for an after-school soccer program. In his new role at MHP Salud, Brad took his experience running health programs in resource-limited areas to analyzing the efficiency of health programing in the United States on MHP Salud's new Community Health Worker (CHW) Return-on-Investment (ROI) project.
