Community Health Worker/Peer Workforce: Recruiting and Hiring for Social Determinants of Health Screening

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic emphasized the value of lived expertise1 that Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Peer Specialists (Peers) workforce bring to the table as health centers addressed systemic inequities that lead to significantly worse COVID-19 outcomes for vulnerable communities (i.e. Black adults are nearly 2x more likely to die from COVID-19). As our public health community continues to eliminate COVID-19-related disparities and health inequities in general, we can draw upon lessons learned and practices from health centers who have been successful in hiring, training, integrating, and retaining CHWs/Peers, with lived experience, to pave the way for our future work in addressing and eliminating social determinants of health disparities that impact our most vulnerable communities.

Community Health Worker Association Development Guide

With a long history of successfully and effectively addressing health disparities, Community Health Workers (CHWs) can fill the gaps in services that many health care organizations experience in reaching underserved populations. Creating an association or state network can engage CHWs and provide greater professional development and networking opportunities, ultimately providing them with the tools to provide better services at their health centers and in their communities. This guide will provide stakeholders step-by-step information on how to initiate a CHW Association. In addition, it will provide an overview of the different types of state regulations and association models used across the nation.

Training for your organization, made simple.

In addition to publishing resources and conducting our own CHW programs, MHP Salud offers a variety of training and consulting services to help organizations create and optimize their own CHW programs. When we provide these services, we put over four decades of experience to work to enhance your organization’s services and improve your overall reach.
